Annual Conference Of

Indian Rheumatology Association

IRA President's Message

My Dear,

Teachers, Senior & Fellow colleagues, Friends, Patients, Scientists and all stakeholders in Rheumatology & Clinical Immunology

Guwahati, an ancient city in the pristine northeastern India is getting ready to host the 34th annual conference of Indian Rheumatology association (IRA). This is the first ever such a meeting in the lands of seven sisters, the other name for the wild and beautiful northeastern India. As a son of the soil from this relatively unexplored region of India, it is a great pleasure, honour and special privilege for me to invite you to IRACON 2018 at Guwahati.

Rheumatology & Clinical Immunology is a relatively newer speciality in India and we have grown by leaps and bounds over the years. Our representation in the Asia Pacific and rest of the globe has been consistently growing and our quality of scientific research is reasonable today as compared to its humble beginning more than 3 decades ago.

Carrying forward the actions from my worthy predecessors, I as the president of IRA as well as my team are committed to the cause of Indian rheumatology and wish to lead a new era.

Our ambitious dreams include: 1. Putting the patient first in all our missions 2. Creating a science pro, relevant and holistic research environment in Indian rheumatology circle 3. Creating databases of common rheumatic diseases in India 4. Establishing long overdue Indian College of Rheumatology and 5. Facilitating post MD training program by IRA leading to graduation of new generation specialists to meet the shortage of rheumatologists in this populous nation. We are marching forward in that direction and we wish Guwahati meeting to witness several milestones towards achieving these goals. I am optimistic with your overwhelming support and will not move backwards in fear of failure or discouragement by obstacles.

One of the special features of the Guwahati meeting would be a preconference patients’ session in this meeting for the first time and formation of a joint forum of patients, caregivers and healthcare providers in Rheumatology. This will facilitate a cordial dialogue across the table for all parties concerned. Nidus of this society has already been formed at Vellore in December 2017. This is a long cherished dream of many and a positive, all-inclusive step towards rheumatology care in India.

Please spend a couple of extra days to enjoy the green beauty of Assam and adjoining states, to visit the holy Kamakshya temple, Kaziranga national park, Beautiful Shillong, rain capital of the world at nearby Cherapunji and the vibrant, multifaceted culture of the northeastern India. Guwahati is also called now the sports capital of India and it is one of the fastest growing cities in India.

Finally, Please get ready with your scientific data - be it clinical, molecular or translational, be it epidemiological or a descriptive series, outcome studies or simply a novel message. Whether you are rheumatologist from India or from any any other nation, physician with special interest in Rheumatology, basic scientist, any healthcare provider in rheumatology including an allied health science colleague, student, a post-graduate trainee, a patient with a rheumatic disease or her/his caregiver - all are welcome.

My warm hearted special invitation to our colleagues from SAAARC / South and Southeast Asian as well as Middle Eastern nations.

Dr Pradip Sarma, the organizing secretary and his team at the picturesque North Eastern Indian landscape is waiting to welcome you along with a galaxy of national and international faculty in this next generation meeting of Indian rheumatology Association (IRACON 2018) at Guwahati in perfect weather conditions. Please mark your diary from 6th to 9th December 2018. All roads of rheumatology in India will lead to Guwahati on those days.
